Moringa Oleifera, known as the drumstick tree is widely cultivated in the north-western region of India, specifically native to the foothills of the Himalayas. The name Moringa is derived from the Tamil word ''murungai', (the twisted pod) means the drumstick.

Moringa contains 13 species out of which Moringa Oleifera is the most popular and widely cultivated. Different species have different types of trees. Some of them are small in size, some are long and huge. Several insect pests and caterpillars on the tree are observed in India.
 
Moringa Oleifera or moringa tree is a multipurpose tree cultivated throughout the tropics.in the South Asian countries and some other parts of the world.


Moringa Oleifera is used as food. The leaves, flowers, fruits, shells, seeds, and even the roots of the tree are all widely used because they have many health benefits. That's the tree
is called the miracle tree.

In the Indian subcontinent, the leaves, flowers, and fruits of the tree are eaten as vegetables. The increases in consumption of moringa food supplements are quite noticeable in India. 

The oil extracted from moringa seeds are commonly used as a food supplement, for the nourishment of hair and skin.

India is the largest producer of moringa, with an annual production of 1.2 million tonnes of fruit. Apart from India, the cultivation of moringa leaves is observed in most Asian countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines Taiwan, etc. 

Moringa leaves are grown in many countries. In Taiwan, the World Vegetable Center cultivates moringa actively. Moringa is also cultivated in Central America, some countries of South America, and Africa.
